gustav, hannah, ike…
i feel like i’ve been in and around a lot of conversations of parents-to-be discussing baby names lately. gustav, hannah, ike… oh wait, those were not potential baby names discussed, those are the names of the last three hurricanes. how to avoid potentially naming your newborn after a hurricane that leaves a path of destruction causing more than an estimate of $20 million dollars in damages from haiti through the united states (gustav). here’s some interesting facts about how hurricanes are named:
- there are six lists of predetermined names that are rotated. the first hurricane of the year gets the “a” name, the second the “b” and so on.
- the list of names is maintained by the world meteorological organization which is made up of an international committee.
- out of respect to those affected, names of hurricanes which have caused huge devastation, are retired.
- five names (dennis, katrina, rita, stan and wilman) were retired in 2005, none in 2006, and three in 2007 (dean, felix, noel). this year we’ve already got gustav and ike.
texas is in the midst of its largest rescue effort ever due to ike, the cost of damages is yet to be determined. josephine will be next. lets hope she’s a mild one.
