despite enthusiast’s efforts (see savepolaroid.com) polaroid will stop manufacturing instant film over the next months. period. once a constant in middle american homes in the 70s, 80s, and even 90s it will soon be a distant memory. here are some interesting facts:
- the first polaroid camera was sold to the public at $95 (the equivalent of $850 today) in 1949.
- the first color film was available to the public in 1963.
- some very high brow artists like ansel adams and design gurus charles and ray eames were consultants to the company and enthusiasts themselves.
- the product release cycle for the polaroid camera and film was 1 year, pretty revolutionary for the time.
- one of the last promotions of the camera was with the spice girls.
