let’s mess with texas
well, what i mean is, let’s mess with the 1M+ tons of plastic found floating in the north pacific gyre–a slow-moving clockwise vortex where four major ocean currents meet–the center of which is about the size of texas. scientists from the scripps institute examining the gyre were flabbergasted when they found that although they were so isolated from human life, “our human footprint is now apparent in even one of the most remote places on the planet.” mary crowley, one of the researchers is a repeat visitor to the place and said “more than 30 years ago, on my first trip to the north pacific gyre i found a few glass ball fishing floats, one net and there were, in four days, perhaps two pieces of floating plastic. returning now… the marine debris situation shows a startling change in this same area. in 30 minutes one easily can count up to 400 pieces of plastic on the sea’s surface.”
researchers will continue to examine the site and will look for new strategies to figure out how to clean up this and other similar messes.

That really sucks. Guess “plastics” is the future for even the remotest places on earth. (I still would like to mess with Texas, though).
