low tech hacking
just two days after we hear about hackers breaching the security on the us’s electrical grids, someone(s) out in california decides to snip some fiber optic lines. telephone (both wireless and landlines), internet, atms, credit cards, etc were rendered inoperable. hospitals, business and emergency workers were all affected resulting in massive disruption in the santa clara, santa cruz and san benito areas. seems it’s not only those who sit comfy behind a desk (the hackers) that cause trouble. the culprit here had to use special tools to pry open heavy manhole covers and climb down a, no doubt, dirty and dusty shaft.
although many of the cut cables were owned by at&t, verizon and sprint were also heavily affected since they rely on at&t to carry their phone traffic. in addition to the fbi’s investigation of the matter, at&t has offered a $250,000 reward for info leading to the arrest of those responsible.
