people, it’s just a phone
the long awaited iphone launched this past friday to much fanfare. with rumors of lines of more than 5 hours these past few days, apple announced today that they’ve sold 1 million iphones this first weekend.
why the long (and slow) lines you ask? to avoid people buying iphones and using them with other wireless services, some smartie at apple came up with the idea of requiring in store activation. in theory this seems like a good idea but this slowed things down even more on friday when the activation servers went down. seems no one thought to make sure the servers could manage the load of millions of activations. adding to the iphone traffic in stores, you’ve got people who had problems with software upgrades and data migration problems due to the launch of the online apps store and the forced migration of .mac accounts to the new mobileme service. apple was either pretty confident in themselves or are just poor planners to have scheduled all of these at the same time.
seems that steve wozniak, co-founder of apple, didn’t want to risk being cut off in line at the end of the day by a store closing. he, along with a bunch of his buddies, reportedly cut to the front of the line at an apple store in san jose. dude, why get in line? isn’t there someone you could’ve called to get a couple shipped to you in advance?
if you’re planning on heading to an apple store to pick one up, they’re sold out at all at&t locations, be sure to check out the availability on apple’s website before heading to the store.
(in the interest of full disclosure, 180 and i headed down to the apple store on sunday because i had lost my phone the night before. once we saw the line, we kept right on walking.)
