that dirty, nasty ‘ho

this is for you gmail users that also use the chat service.  there’s a new phishing scam that takes over your account and sends messages to your address book.  here’s how it works:

  1. you log in to gmail and gchat
  2. you get a message that looks like it’s from a friend asking you to click on a url that starts with tinyurl.com
  3. you are navigated to a site called viddyho
  4. it prompts you to log in using your email and password and you enter it
  5. the scam sends messages to all of your contacts and spreads

if you’ve already fallen for this scam, avivah litan of tech advisor gartner group says you should change your password and run a virus scan.  she adds, “in the really sophisticated cases, you could run 40 antivirus programs and it might not find any malware…you may need to make a backup, delete everything and start over. that’s the safest thing to do.”

we’ve said it before and i’ll say it again: hackers blow.
