time to start investing in carrier pigeons?
you may want to consider it after this story. as you probably know, the internet has its security flaws and LOSER* hackers spend a lot of time trying to exploit those flaws. engineers focusing on the problem say that the best way to fix the problem is to scrap the darn thing and start over, “there is a growing belief among engineers and security experts that Internet security and privacy have become so maddeningly elusive that the only way to fix the problem is to start over.” the creators of the internet, the (military and acadamia) never envisioned the tool to be what it is today (i.e., the whole world runs off of it) “there was no one central control point and its designers wanted to make it possible for every network to exchange data with every other network. little attention was given to security.”
most security experts say the internet is a ticking time bomb, extremely vulnerable to security breaches–even the military had a break-in in iraq and afghanistan last year. not surprisingly, we’ve spent our time patching up problems –putting lipstick on a pig–rather than figure out a version 2.0 for the web.
there are some serious efforts underway to begin rethinking the thing, a number of projects are underway. for example, at stanford, researchers are creating a system to slide a more advanced network quietly underneath current internet, a system that goes live this summer at eight college campuses around the nation.
despite the danger, i think pigeons may a good short term investment. pigeon raising in europe is HUGE.
* when i say loser, i mean that in the nicest way possible.
