what is it with the germans and polar bears?

in 2006, knut was all over the news after his mother abandoned him and his brother on a rock at the polar bear enclosure at the berlin zoo. knut was in the news for weeks, from animal activist who thought the zoo should leave him to die to his supposed role in death of yan yan, a panda bear.

in jan 2008, 5 week old flocke was taken away from his mother over fears that she might eat him. flocke makes his public debut today.

my question – is this type of polar bear parenting happening in other parts of the world and we’re just not hearing about it or do the germans just really love bears and are good at making money off of them?
