the iranians are in the news again. this time, they’ve released a set of approved haircuts for men, an alternative to the soon to be illegal decadent western haircuts like the mullet. according to time magazine “You’re in the clear if you have a short, conservative haircut – and you can use hair gel, just not a lot. The government is even cool with side parts and Elvis-style poufs. But if your hair is long, spiky, or be-mulleted, beware. And don’t you dare think of plucking your unibrow.” if you get busted with one of the hair don’ts, you’ll get your hair cut the first time and fined the second time.

and like lindsay lohan, you’ll probably get sent to jail the third time.

even though her look was digitally created for her bad romance video, fans are buying contacts that will make them look like her. according to the new york times, the look she wore in the video can be made possible through contacts that first became popular in asia. the eye fashion “give wearers a childlike, doe-eyed appearance [and the resulting] look is characteristic of Japanese anime and is also popular in Korea. Fame-seekers there called “ulzzang girls” post cute but sexy head shots of themselves online, nearly always wearing circle lenses to accentuate their eyes.”

the trend has become all the rage with u.s. teens who don them for facebook profile picts. take melody vue, a north carolina teen for example, she says “I’ve noticed a lot of girls in my town have started to wear them a lot.” vue herself owns 22 pairs of the things and wears them often.

so what’s the problem?

the f.d.a. warns that they oxygen cutting eye gear can cause serious damage, if not blindness and that’s why they’re illegal here in the u.s. so an allegiance to gaga could in fact be a blind one. and to think i thought that the eye jewelry we told you about was bad.

a friend recently told me about power balance, a bracelet with a hologram that is supposed to help enhance your strength, flexibility and balance. i thought i’d check it out and whoa… it seems like this is a trend that i’ve totally missed. according to the power balance website, which sells these items in wristband and pendant form, the hologram is”embedded with frequencies that react positively with your body’s natural energy field” thereby increasing the energy flow through the body. i also found testimonials from all kinds of athletes, from basketball players (lamar odom and shaquille o’neal) to baseball (ricky romero), formula 1 drivers, golfers, hockey players, and professional surfers. it’s also been written up in all kinds of sporting magazines. youtube has a bunch of videos either validating or proving the claim false. the devices are on sale on the power balance website, range from $30 – $80. have you tried it?

secret society hoodies on sale on ebay

mark zuckerberg, founder of facebook.com, was at the wall street journal’s d:all things digital conference last week and caused a little commotion when he took off the hoodie he was wearing. the techie blog world went crazy dissecting the insignia/logo that appeared on the inside of the hoodie. what did it mean, where did he get it from, where can we get one, they asked. facebook has been mum but the hoodie has now appeared for sale on ebay. there’s two listings so far, the first is at $1,025 and it’s gotten 37 bids by a seller who claims it’s a employee only item and he/she received it as a gift from an employee. the second listing is new and has no bids yet but it has a starting price for $150 for the hoodie and matching sweat pants. without some confirmation from facebook, there’s no way to know if these are authentic or not. i won’t be surprised if we hear in a couple of weeks that some guy was printing these in his basement.

jason alexander (pictured above) lost 30 pounds in 15 weeks following jenny craig, but men who want a short cut can go to the hottest item in men’s retail, men’s shapewear. neiman marcus the once exclusive retailer of spanx for men confirmed that the items are flying off of the shelves as quickly as they come in and that shoppers can now get them at bloomies, saks, and nordstrom*. while sara blakely, the founder of spanx is probably happy that the men’s product is increasing the company’s bottom (he he) line, she cautioned that the products were not made for the ‘biggies‘, they were made for the ‘smalls‘– the brand was not created for the ‘hugely overweight’ –the article points out that–even gwyneth paltrow wears spanx (let’s remember though, oprah does too).

the product could have a very positive impact on the many job seekers out there. stephen viscusi, a career coach and author of “Bulletproof Your Job” says that all men over the age of 40 should be wearing these products on job interviews because he said “when you feel good about the way you look, you interview well.” other dudes concur, “It enhances your figure, it fits tight, sucks you in,” said an ohio software exec who owns more than a few (six) of the spanx shirts.

anderson cooper.. with glasses (not so good)

with a mom like gloria vanderbilt, you’d think anderson cooper would have a little more fashion sense. i mean, he’s got great taste in ties but he clearly needs some help with eyeglasses. he debuted the two new pairs of glasses he got last week on live with regis and kelly and let’s just say, he needs to go back to the store.

(and yes, they look exactly alike.)

three guys went to court over a suit and for the greater good for all, they all agreed to donate the suit. the guys: oj simpson, fred goldman (ron goldman’s father) and mike gilbert (simpson’s former agent). the suit: the suit oj wore when he was acquitted from the criminal case accusing him of murdering nicole simpson and ron goldman. the museum: the smithonsian. fortunately, the smithonsion turned them down saying it was not appropriate for their collection. good to know that someone involved in this story has some sense.

it’s holy week in new york ( a.k.a. mercecdes benz fashion week) and all eyes are looking to gotham for a hint at what our fall wardrobes will look like. outside of new york, fashion week, currently held at the famous bryant park tents was made famous by project runway. according to the new york times, the 3 tents will host 65 shows over 7 days. in september, fashion week will move to new york’s famed lincoln center for the of spring 2011 collections. if you’ve a little time on your hands and you want to look and learn, check out these sites:

it’s been an awesome year at sb and before we jump into new year, we thought we’d take a look at your favorite stories from 2009. here are the top 5, in order by page count:

not sure I want this to be true about rumors debates the age old question: daytime sacred bird (aka anderson cooper) or nighttime sacred bird? in my dream world, it would be both.
spring ’10 trends gives us some ideas on how can some of our favorite (anderson cooper and bill hemmer) and not so favorite (glenn beck and rush limbaugh) news men may stay on top of the men’s runway fashion trend. hint: there might be a little bling involved.
recycling is good gives us a peek into how some news anchors might be making (or saving) a few extra bucks.

bill hemmer loves his purple

i predict.. that bill hemmer will be wearing a purple tie for this friday’s broadcast of fox news american’s newsroom . i know this not because i’m some kind of psychic but because it’s friday and he wears a purple tie every friday (which explains why he has more than one). he does so for his high school football team, the elder high school panthers, who have a “purple friday” tradition. i guess it’s a lot of work putting together the wardrobe for five days of television so having one “tradition” to fill the days makes things easier. and of course, we know that hemmer is a man of routine.
