the young men’s christian association, also known as the ymca, is going through a little rebranding. they’ve decided to drop the “mca” and just go with the Y, as they’ve been commonly called for years. said kate coleman, the chief marketing officer said “It’s a way of being warmer, more genuine, more welcoming, when you call yourself what everyone else calls you.”

it’ll be a sad thing 10 years down the line when the kids singing and dancing to the village people’s “ymca.” song don’t know where the song came from. but then again, I’m not sure it really matters the members of the group in their outfits – the cop, the cowboy, etc

even though her look was digitally created for her bad romance video, fans are buying contacts that will make them look like her. according to the new york times, the look she wore in the video can be made possible through contacts that first became popular in asia. the eye fashion “give wearers a childlike, doe-eyed appearance [and the resulting] look is characteristic of Japanese anime and is also popular in Korea. Fame-seekers there called “ulzzang girls” post cute but sexy head shots of themselves online, nearly always wearing circle lenses to accentuate their eyes.”

the trend has become all the rage with u.s. teens who don them for facebook profile picts. take melody vue, a north carolina teen for example, she says “I’ve noticed a lot of girls in my town have started to wear them a lot.” vue herself owns 22 pairs of the things and wears them often.

so what’s the problem?

the f.d.a. warns that they oxygen cutting eye gear can cause serious damage, if not blindness and that’s why they’re illegal here in the u.s. so an allegiance to gaga could in fact be a blind one. and to think i thought that the eye jewelry we told you about was bad.

while record number of people are showing at food banks, the better half are busying shopping at auctions for memorabilia. here’s some of what they’re buying

three x-rays of marilyn monroe’s chest from a 1954 hospital stay netted $45,000
earrings worn by kate winslet in the blockbuster titanic movie sold for $25,000
one of michael jackson’s infamous crystal-studded gloves bought in $190,000
a lock of elvis presley’s hair went for $20,000
prince’s purple rain lyrics, handwritten, at $55,000

to be fair, the auctions took place at planet hollywood in las vegas where one good turn at the tables can buy you madonna’s bra ($10,000).

you know that if u2 is giving a free concert, there’s going to be trouble. 10,000 tickets were gone in 3 hours. mtv, which was sponsoring the show as part of this year’s mtv europe music awards, selected the location (brandenburg gate in berlin) to commemorate 20 years of the berlin wall coming down. so what do they do? they decide to put up a wall. for crowd control, they built a 12ft metal structure and covered it with white tarp to block the view of the stage from the street to prevent non-ticket holders from crowding on the streets. mtv, not recognizing the irony, said it installed the wall “around the site to ensure the safety and security of the attendees at the event as well as residents and businesses in the area.”

for those who had to settled for watching u2’s performance on the mtv awards show, they were were left with disappointment. only one song from their 20 minute concert aired. oh, and david hasselhoff co-presented. imaging having to sit through that for one song.

as everyone, including his own family*, rushes to capitalizes on michael jackson’s death, his first posthumous single was released today. besides the single, “this is it” the movie, will be released in theaters at the end of the month.

*although we all want to believe the jackson brothers singing backup was done in memory of their brother instead of bringing the spotlight back on themselves

high brow raises an eyebrow

for the first time in the history of new york’s metropolitan opera, the audience booed the production team headed by switzerland’s luc bondy because his production strayed greatly from the very famous and familiar production of puccini’s tosca. according to an account in the huffington post the production team’s ” appearance on stage at the end turned what had been a standing ovation for the cast into a raucous protest, prompting the management to bring down the curtain.” here is a list of some of the infractions:

they made a usually ornate church look like a prison.
the murder scene was lame.
the murderer hangs out with the body of the guy she’s killed, instead of rushing from the room

no word if the opera will undergo some changes to avoid similar outbursts in the remaining 15 showings. if rich aristocrats behave like this in public, is it surprising that people like serena williams, joe wilson, and kanye west don’t put their best foot forward?

i wonder what alex and simon (famous opera goers and cast members of the real housewives of new york and pictured here) thought?

three months after the whole chris brown/rihanna incident and with a court case is still pending, brown finally breaks his silence and speaks, sort of. brown uploaded a short video message today and mentions his album and single coming out this summer, no doubt to let his fans know “…we ain’t going nowhere.” he goes on to say “Everybody that’s haters, they just been haters. All my real fans, I love you all.” so all you chris brown fans, stop worrying. he loves you (hopefully not as much as he loved rihanna) and he ain’t going nowhere.

nadja benaissa, a pop star in europe was arrested for having un-protected sex with three dudes (fans, i guess) and not telling them that she was h.i.v. positive (one of the dudes is now h.i.v. positive). of course, she’s denying the charges and says she should be presumed innocent until proven otherwise.

benaissa’s career was launched in 2000 when she was part of the german version of the show popstars and became part of the group “no angels”. the band became german’s most successful girl group ever. something tells me her former band mates won’t be going for a reunion tour.

Eminem – New Music – More Music Videos

released just a day ago, eminem’s new music and the accompanying video (above) in which he evicerates celebrities like jessica simpson, sarah palin, and kim kardashian is the talk of the town but now it’s is nothing compared to what came out of al qaeda’s recording studio. a terrorist group called al-shabaab working out of somalia released a 30 minute video “featuring an anti-american hip-hop score and images of usama bin laden.” the group is led by a man who calls himself abu mansur al-amriki (“the american” in arabic). the video shows “the american” leading a group of soldiers into battle speaking to them in both perfect english and arabic.

this development is of great interest here in the united states because a) the government is very concerned about al qaeda’s activity in the horn of africa and b) 20 young men of somalian descent dissappeared last year and are believed to have gone to somalia to join this al-shabaab group.

while the video may not be for sale on itunes, you can get it for free on youtube. watching the eminem video above, i just don’t get why anyone wouldn’t want to be a part of this great culture.
